The mind boggles at the sheer density of this city. Seemingly impassable walls of skyscrapers stand like modern versions of Beijing's ancient city walls, yet this metropolis sprawls to the horizon in every direction like a Los Angeles filled with a dozen Manhattans. Still, the very heart of the the city, both geographically and spiritually, is the Ming Dynasty Imperial Palace, which, like many other ancient sites peppered around Beijing, seems to exist in a timeless world of its own. Stare at some of these city vistas long enough and they turn into surreal abstractions.
