Where in the world...?

Here you can view selected photos from my galleries in a whole different context. Images that have been "geo-tagged" with GPS coordinates can be viewed on a satellite-image map at their exact location on the planet!

Each marker displayed on the map corresponds to the geographical location of a specific photo. Clicking on a marker will display a thumbnail of the corresponding photo (clicking on the thumbnail will open the larger image from my gallery in a separate window.)

Using the controls on the left side of the map-window, zoom in for a closer look. In most cases, the sattelite image is of such high resolution that you will easily be able to see the subject of the photograph on the map. The map images with less resolution will still give you a sense of context as to where a particular photo was captured.

Depending on the subject-matter of the photograph, a marker is placed on the map at either the point from which the photo was captured (Where the camera was), or the point at which the subject of the photo itself is located (where the subject is). So as to differentiate between the two, I've employed two different types of markers on my maps:

= The spot where the photo was taken from. = The subject of the photo.

Navigating around the map is easy. Select one of the four maps using the buttons on the upper-left corner of the map-window (the window is already displaying the map of China). The controls on the center-left side of the map-window enable you to zoom in or out and move around the map. You can also just grab inside the map-window with your cursor and drag the map around to navigate.

NOTE: Give the icons a minute to load - there's a lot of them!

China 2006 - Places & Faces Galleries

The Big City: Beijing : Out with the old and in with the new: China's capital has been undergoing a wholesale refurbishment in anticipation of the 2008 Olympic Games and can now be considered a World Class Capital City. The local economy is on fire and Beijingers are enjoying an unprecedented standard of living and quality of life. The photos in this gallery were shot primarily in and around Beijing's central Wangfujing shopping district, with a few taken in the Sanlitun and Houhai areas. The central theme here - with both of these galleries, actually - is a slice of daily life: ordinary people in the midst of doing what they routinely do in the landscape of modern China.

The Countryside: Henan Province : The heartland of China: Henan is China's most densely populated province and one of it's most rural. Approximately 20 million people reside in one of Henan's four major cities; the rest of the populace - some 70 million - live in small towns and villages peppered throughout the province. Unlike spit-and-polished Beijing, Henan is still very much the Third World and though there has been much modernization and improvement of local conditions in recent years, there is a very palpable grittiness about the place. Hopefully I've captured that in some of these photos. These pictures were taken throughout the Yellow River Valley, primarily in & around the small city of Yanshi (pop. 750k), also in the nearby city of Gong Yi, the town of Wenxian, and the rural Henan Countryside. A few were taken in the large city of Luoyang (pop. 6 million). These photos are mostly images of average people going about their daily routines, many of whom are in motion and on the move in one form or another - a defining characteristic of interior China.
